History
Urata Station opened on 11 March 1989 as an additional stop on the existing Chikuhō Main Line, paid for in full by JR Kyushu at a cost of about 51 million yen. It serves the city of Iizuka in Fukuoka Prefecture and lies 36.2 km from the line origin at Wakamatsu, carrying the station number JC15. The structure consists of two side platforms and two tracks linked by a level crossing, with a single-storey log-house-styled station building on the east side housing an automatic ticket machine and waiting area. SUGOCA IC card use began on 1 March 2009, and the station was de-staffed on 14 March 2015. It is also a designated stop on the Fukuhoku Yutaka Line service pattern.

Notes
The log-house-styled station building stands on only one side of the tracks; passengers using the opposite platform climb a separate flight of steps directly off the hillside road.
