History

Yukawa Station opened on 18 July 1935 in what is now Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, when the JNR Kisei Middle Line was extended from Kii-Katsuura to Shimosato. It joined the Kisei West Line in August 1940 and the through Kisei Main Line on 15 July 1959. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1961 and the present concrete platform-level building was completed on 22 April 1968. Parcels handling ended on 1 April 1978 and the station became unstaffed on 14 March 1985. JR West inherited Yukawa at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of JNR; ICOCA support began on 13 March 2021. The platform sits beside Yukawa Beach with a clear view of the surf, and is operated remotely from Shingū Station.

Notes

The platform overlooks Yukawa Beach (closed from 2020), and the famous landscape Yukashigata — named by Wakayama-born poet Haruo Satō — lies about 800 metres north along National Route 42, with Yukawa Onsen welling up along its banks.
