History

Yakuin Station opened on 1 June 1927 as a station on the Kyushu Railway (now Nishitetsu Tenjin Ōmuta Line). The station building was rebuilt in 1968. Elevated platforms entered service on 25 March 1995 as the elevation works between Fukuoka and Hirao were completed, and from that date every train on the line stopped here. A new station building was completed in March 1996. The Fukuoka City Subway Nanakuma Line subway-level platforms opened on 3 February 2005, turning Yakuin into a connecting station between Nishitetsu and the subway. The station carries codes T02 (Nishitetsu) and N14 (Nanakuma).

Notes

The pre-1975 grade crossing of the tram's Jōnan line with the Nishitetsu railway just outside this station was cited by Fukuoka-born television personality Tamori as the spot that first drew him to railway-watching as a hobby.
