History

Imajuku Station opened on 15 April 1925 as an intermediate stop when the private Kitakyushu Railway extended its line eastwards and opened Meinohama as the new eastern terminus on the same day. The line was nationalised in 1937 and designated the Chikuhi Line. On 22 March 1983 the Meinohama–Karatsu section was electrified and through-running with the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line began, at which point Imajuku was removed from the Fukuoka-shi-nai tariff zone. Automatic fare gates were installed on 18 December 1999, SUGOCA service began on 13 March 2010, and platform doors entered service on 13 March 2021. The station passed to JR Kyushu at the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation.

Notes

On the evening of 19 March 1998 a 6-car Fukuoka-Airport-bound local approaching Imajuku derailed in high winds, injuring six passengers; an investigation found the transport dispatchers had let trains keep running despite warning thresholds being exceeded, and three of them were later summarily indicted.
