History
Susenji Station opened on 15 April 1925 with the Kitakyushu Railway's extension to Meinohama, as a new intermediate stop. The track was nationalised on 1 October 1937 and became part of what is now the JR Chikuhi Line. Freight handling ended on 10 February 1972 and parcel service on 1 February 1984. From 22 March 1983, electrification of the Meinohama–Karatsu section and mutual through-running with the Fukuoka City Subway began, but at the same date Susenji was removed from the JR "Fukuoka city station" tariff bloc as the Hakata–Meinohama section was discontinued. Platform doors entered service on 13 March 2021. JR Kyushu took over direct operation from its outsourcing subsidiary on 1 October 2023. The station code is JK05.

Notes
Susenji is one of just three JR stations nationwide (with Meinohama and Imajuku) that were formerly part of the JR "Fukuoka city" zonal-fare tariff bloc but were later removed from it when the Hakata-Meinohama track was discontinued in 1983.
