History

Kasuga Station opened on 11 March 1989 as an added stop on the existing JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line in Kasugabaru-kitamachi 5-chōme, Kasuga, Fukuoka Prefecture; the station carries number JB04. Automatic ticket gates were installed and brought into use on 29 February 2000. On 15 March 2003 the station was rebuilt as an overhead-bridge station and made barrier-free with multipurpose toilets and a lift. ICOCA-compatible SUGOCA service began on 1 March 2009, and on 11 March 2022 the staffed ticket window was closed.

Kasuga Station is in north-eastern Kasuga city, about 250 metres from Kasuga City Hall. The station consists of two opposed ground-level side platforms beneath an elevated station building, with a dead-section (kō-kō section) on the up platform towards the Kagoshima end. It was a contracted station operated by JR Kyushu Service Support until 30 September 2023, equipped with the staffed 'Dō-zo' assistance reserved-seat ticket machine and automatic gates. The Kasuga city public bus 'Yayoi' and Nishitetsu Bus stop 'JR Kasuga-eki' on Prefectural Route 56 just outside the station.
