History

Tanami Station opened on 8 August 1940 with the inauguration of the Japanese National Railways Kisei Nishi Line section between Esumi and Kushimoto. Reclassified into the through Kisei Main Line on 15 July 1959, it lost freight handling on 1 July 1971 and parcel service on 1 April 1978, and was destaffed on 14 March 1985. Operation transferred to West Japan Railway (JR West) on 1 April 1987 with the breakup of JNR. The long-standing station building was rebuilt in 2020, and ICOCA contactless ticketing was introduced on 13 March 2021. The stop sits in the Tanami district of Kushimoto, Wakayama.
