History

Yōkoku Station was opened by Japanese National Railways on 9 March 1987, as a late-stage addition to the existing Nippō Main Line in the centre of Hiji, Ōita Prefecture, less than a month before the privatisation that transferred it to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987. In 2016 the town of Hiji completed a major urban redevelopment that shifted the station 100 metres east and erected a new concrete building incorporating a staffed ticket window, a waiting area, a community gallery and a footbridge serving the opposite platform. The footbridge doubles as a 24-hour free public passage between the streets on either side of the tracks.
