History

Chikugo-Ōishi Station opened on 11 July 1931 as the new eastern terminus of the Kyūdai Main Line when JGR extended the line eastwards from Chikugo-Yoshii. It became a through station on 12 March 1932 with the line's extension to Yoake. Freight handling ended on 20 February 1971, parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station was unstaffed on 15 February of the same year. At the 1 April 1987 privatisation control passed to JR Kyushu and the station was again unstaffed. The original wooden station building was dismantled on 26 January 2007. Services were suspended by the 2012 and 2017 northern-Kyushu torrential rains, resuming on 25 August 2012 and 18 July 2017 respectively.

Notes

The name "Chikugo-Ōishi" reflects the village of Ōishi in Ukiha District, where the station originally stood, with the old province name "Chikugo" prefixed to distinguish it from same-named stations elsewhere.
