History

Kawahigashi Station opened on 11 March 1989 in Niri-chō, Imari, Saga Prefecture, as an infill stop on the third-sector Matsuura Railway's Nishi-Kyūshū Line. The line itself had been transferred from JR Kyushu to Matsuura Railway on 1 April 1988, and Kawahigashi sits 11.6 km from the line's start at Arita. Trains on this branch terminate at either Arita or Imari, with onward transfers at Imari for Saza and Sasebo. The station is a simple ground-level halt with a single side platform serving a bidirectional track. There is no station building, but a waiting room is provided on the platform and a toilet, vending machine and public phone are located below the platform.

Notes

In January 2024 the station-name signs at seven Imari-area stations, Kawahigashi included, were replaced using money raised through a crowdfunding campaign — a local rather than operator-led upgrade.
