History

Era Station opened on 15 December 1929 as an intermediate stop on the Daito Line on the same day that the line was extended west from Bungo-Nakamura to a new terminus at Bungo-Mori. On 27 June 1937 the Miyanoharu Line began branching from Era, making it a junction station, though that branch was suspended in 1943, restored in 1948, and finally abolished on 1 December 1984. The Daito Line was folded into the Kyudai Main Line on 15 November 1934, and Era passed to JR Kyushu at privatisation on 1 April 1987. The original 1929 station building and an adjoining residence burned down on 18 January 2014; Kokonoe Town built and opened a replacement in dozo-style white-plaster walls on 31 March 2015, with an attached museum on the local sake brewery.

Notes

The 2015 replacement station building was deliberately designed to resemble the nearby Yatsushika sake brewery, complete with a ball of cedar needles hung outside indicating a fresh batch of sake has been brewed.
