History

Noya Station opened on 26 November 1926 as the new western terminus of the Daito Line, when Japanese Government Railways extended the track west from Yufuin. The Daito Line had been built on the formerly private Daito Railway, nationalised on 1 December 1922. Noya became a through-station on 28 October 1928 when the line was extended further to Bungo-Nakamura, and was folded into the Kyudai Main Line on 15 November 1934. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1962 and parcel handling on 20 February 1971. The current modest unstaffed station building dates to 1984, and control passed to JR Kyushu at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. A passing loop was installed on 15 July 1992 in support of the limited-express Yufu services.
