History

Sakanoichi Station opened on 1 April 1914 as an intermediate station on the line that Japanese Government Railways was extending south from Ōita to the new terminus at Kōzaki. The route had been designated the Hōshū Main Line on 12 October 1909 after JGR nationalised the private Kyushu Railway from Kokura to Yanagigaura on 1 July 1907. On 15 December 1923 the Hōshū Main Line was renamed the Nippō Main Line. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Kyushu. Its conversion to a remotely-managed Smart Support Station was deferred from 17 March 2018 to 1 July 2023 while accessibility works were completed.
