History

Yunohira Station opened on 29 September 1923 as the new western terminus of the former Daito Line, after Japanese Government Railways nationalised the private Daito Railway in 1922 and extended its track west from Shōnai. On 29 July 1925 a further extension to Kita-Yufuin (today Yufuin) made Yunohira a through-station, and from 15 November 1934 the route was redesignated part of the Kyūdai Main Line when the Daito Line linked up with it further west. The station became unstaffed in 1984 and a new building was completed that June. On 1 April 1987 it passed to JR Kyushu at privatisation.

Notes

The Yunohira Onsen district featured in the 1982 Tora-san film "Hana mo Arashi mo Torajirō," and in 2006 the local tourism association reopened the platform-2 waiting room as a Tora-san memorial, complete with a bench actor Kiyoshi Atsumi reportedly used on set.
