History

Shōnai Station opened on 29 September 1923 as the Daito Line was extended from Onoya to Yunohira, with Shōnai sited as one of the intermediate stations along the new track. Cargo handling was abolished on 20 February 1971, when the station was placed under business entrustment, and parcel handling ended on 1 November 1984, when the station became unstaffed. With the breakup and privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR Kyushu. The station building was rebuilt on 9 March 2004 as a single-storey steel-frame structure with a wooden-style exterior.

Notes

Although the station carries the Shōnai name, the centre of the former Shōnai Town and the Yufu City Hall (the former Shōnai Town Hall) are closer to neighbouring Tenjin'yama Station; nevertheless, the JTB Timetable's front-of-book route map designates Shōnai as the representative station for Yufu City. Because trains can also reverse here towards Yufuin, the cruise train "Seven Stars in Kyushu" uses Shōnai as the turnback point for its tea-time runs between Yufuin and Shōnai.
