History
Nagasu opened on 1 April 1891 as the privately run Kyushu Railway extended its line south from Kurume to Takase (now Tamana). The state took it over on 1 July 1907, and the route through Nagasu became part of the Kagoshima Main Line on 21 November 1909. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1962; the station was rebuilt in September 1982 as the first hashigami (bridge-form) station building in Kumamoto Prefecture, before parcel handling ceased on 1 February 1984. JR Kyushu took over at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The Midori-no-Madoguchi staffed ticket office closed on 31 March 2022, after which station management was outsourced.

Notes
Reflecting Nagasu's local pride in being a goldfish-farming hub, oversized goldfish sculptures sit on each of the station's two platforms.
