History
Taira opened on 10 May 1913 as Tairamachi Station (多比良町駅), on the privately built Shimabara Railway line running north along the Ariake Sea from Isahaya. The station was placed under simple commission management on 30 September 1984, the building was rebuilt in 2013 to add a flush toilet, accessible ramp and barrier-free facilities, and the stop was renamed Taira on 1 October 2019 alongside several other Shimabara Railway re-namings. Today the layout consists of two staggered side platforms linked by ungated internal level crossings, and tickets are still sold in person at the staffed waiting-room counter rather than by an automatic vending machine.

Notes
Taira is the closest station to Nagasaki Prefectural Kunimi High School, a national high-school football powerhouse, and a stone monument shaped like a football stands in the south-platform waiting area to commemorate the team.
