History
Nishisato opened on 1 October 1943 as Nishisato Signal Box on the existing Kagoshima Main Line, a wartime facility on the section linking Kumamoto to Tabaruzaka. Japanese National Railways upgraded the box to a full passenger station on 10 December 1954, and the stop became unstaffed from 1 September 1970. JR Kyushu took over on 1 April 1987 at JNR privatisation. SUGOCA access began on 1 December 2012, the rapid "Kumamoto Liner" added the station to its calling pattern on 15 March 2014, and numbered platforms were introduced on 14 March 2015. The opening of nearby Kumamoto Health Sciences University has driven a noticeable rise in ridership in recent years.

Notes
The station name is read "Nishisato," but local residents and the on-board automated announcements voice it "Nishizato," reflecting how the surrounding district has always been called.
