History

Sōjōdaigakumae Station is a small at-grade stop on the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line in the Nishi-ku ward of Kumamoto. It opened on 13 March 1988 as an infill station named Kumamoto-Kōdaimae, literally "in front of Kumamoto Industrial University." After the institution was renamed Sojo University in April 2000, the station followed suit on 13 March 2004. SUGOCA IC-card service was introduced on 1 December 2012, and the ticket booth was closed on 11 March 2022 with full unstaffed operation beginning the following day. The station consists of two side platforms with shelters but no proper station building, connected by a footbridge.

Notes

The station was renamed four years after Kumamoto Industrial University adopted the Sojo name, with the older "Kumamoto-Kōdaimae" signage remaining in place until the 2004 renaming.
