History
Nakamatsu Station opened on 12 February 1928 on what was then the Japanese Government Railways Takamori Line and is today operated by the third-sector Minamiaso Railway, which took over from JNR on 1 April 1986. A new station building entered service on 1 April 1987, and a passing loop with two platforms and two tracks was added on 1 August 1989, making it the only station on the line with such facilities. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes suspended all service; the section between Nakamatsu and Takamori reopened on 31 July 2016, and full through service was restored on 15 July 2023 with the reopening of Tateno - Nakamatsu.
