History
Sumiyoshi tram stop opened on 16 September 1950 (Shōwa 25) when Nagasaki Electric Tramway extended the line from Ōhashi to this point, terminating here as the northern end of the system at that time. Ten years later, on 8 May 1960 (Shōwa 35), the Akasako Branch Line opened beyond Sumiyoshi to Akasako, making this stop the junction between the Main Line (toward Nagasaki-eki-mae) and the Akasako Branch — all trains run through both lines. The stop was repositioned at that time. In January 2007 (Heisei 19) the tent-style canopy was replaced with a landscape-conscious shelter-style roof. The stop carries route number 12 and is served by routes 1, 2 and 3.

Notes
Sumiyoshi sits in the largest commercial district of northern Nagasaki, with arcades extending all the way to neighbouring Shōwamachi-dōri stop on both sides of the road. Although JR Kyūshū's Nagasaki Main Line (Nagayo branch) runs parallel via nearby Nishi-Urakami Station, Sumiyoshi outperforms it for access to central Nagasaki, and almost all riders here are heading toward Nagasaki-eki-mae rather than Akasako.
