History

Nagasaki-Daigaku tram stop opened on 16 September 1950, the same day the Nagasaki Electric Tramway Main Line section between Ōhashi and Sumiyoshi began service, originally as Ienomachi Station (家野町停留場). It was renamed Nagasaki-Daigaku-mae Station (長崎大学前停留場) on 20 September 1966. A pedestrian overpass was added in March 1969; that bridge was removed on 27 August 1999 to relieve traffic congestion, and a crosswalk and signal were installed in its place. On 21 September 1999 the stop itself was moved, with refurbishment completed on the 28th — the platforms were lengthened to 24 m and the canopy replaced. On 1 August 2018 the suffix "-mae" was dropped and the stop became the current Nagasaki-Daigaku, to more clearly mark its location at the main gate of Nagasaki University's Bunkyō campus. The two facing platforms sit on either side of the two tracks, offset along the line.

Notes

The stop sits directly in front of Nagasaki University's main Bunkyō campus, which houses six of the university's faculties; students from the separate Sakamoto (medicine/dentistry) and Katafuchi (economics) campuses also commute here for general-education classes.
