Sōfukuji Station

崇福寺

History

Sōfukuji opened on 17 June 1968 as Shōkaku-jishita when the Nagasaki Electric Tramway extended south from Shianbashi. The Tamatai River was culverted and the road widened to make space for the tracks. Extension at a time when many other Japanese tram lines were being closed was unusual enough to attract national attention, and was justified by the need to relieve growing road congestion around Shianbashi. The canopy was replaced with a shelter design on 2 February 2003, the retaining wall at the buffer was cut back by 3 metres at the same time, and on 1 August 2018 the stop was renamed Sōfukuji after the National-Treasure Sōfukuji Temple nearby. It is the western terminus of the Main Line and stop number 35.

Notes

Although the stop's old name was read Shōkaku-jishita and the nearby temple's name is read Shōgaku-ji, the platform clings precariously to a culverted section of the Tamatai River and passengers can see the water below from the platform edge.
