History
Uto Station opened on 28 January 1895 when the privately built Kyushu Railway extended its line from Kawajiri to Matsubase. On 25 December 1899 a branch to Misumi opened from the station, making it a junction. Kyushu Railway was nationalised on 1 July 1907, and the 1909 line-name reform first placed the route on the Hitoyoshi Main Line before incorporating it into the Kagoshima Main Line later that year. The original station building burned down in the air raid of 10 August 1945 and was rebuilt in September 1947. The station passed to JR Kyushu at the 1 April 1987 privatisation, and an elevated station building with an east exit opened on 1 November 2009. Direct JR Kyushu staffing replaced an outsourcing arrangement on 1 October 2023.
