History

Kiyotake Station opened on 20 March 1915 as the southern terminus of a line laid northwards from Miyazaki by Miyazaki Prefectural Railway. On 25 October 1916, the track at Kiyotake was linked up with the Japanese Government Railways' track from Aoidake. The Prefectural Railway was nationalised and the route was designated part of the Miyazaki Line — later, on 21 September 1917, the Miyazaki Main Line. By 1923 the Miyazaki Main Line had reached Shigeoka in the north, and on 15 December 1923 the entire stretch from Shigeoka through Miyazaki to Yoshimatsu, Kiyotake included, was designated part of the Nippō Main Line. Freight operations were discontinued in 1971 and baggage handling in 1984. With the breakup and privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987, Kiyotake came under JR Kyushu.
