History

Sosanji Station was first established on 20 March 1915 by the private Miyazaki Light Railway (later the Miyazaki Railway) as an intermediate stop on the line between Minami-Miyazaki and Uchiumi. The private railway closed on 1 July 1962, and Japanese National Railways then incorporated the route into its Nichinan Line, reopening Sosanji as a passenger-only unstaffed stop on 8 May 1963. The platform was extended by 20 metres in March 1978, giving it a usable length of 90 metres. The station passed to JR Kyushu at privatisation on 1 April 1987. SUGOCA card service is scheduled to begin on 17 January 2026.
