History

Hyōkiyama began on 11 September 1916 as the Hyōkiyama Signal Stop on the Kagoshima Main Line, used for passing trains in the narrow Tenkō river valley. It was promoted to a full station on 11 October 1920. When the Yatsushiro–Yoshimatsu–Kagoshima section of the Kagoshima Main Line was reorganised on 17 October 1927, the station became part of the new Hisatsu Line. Freight operations ended on 1 April 1961, baggage handling on 1 February 1984, and the station became unstaffed on 1 November 1986. It passed to JR Kyushu at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987.
