History

Nikenchaya stop was installed on 1 December 1912 (Taishō 1) by the Kagoshima Electric Tramway and was transferred to the Kagoshima City Tram Electrical Bureau (today the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau) on 1 July 1928 (Shōwa 3). It is on the Taniyama Line of the Kagoshima City Tram, served only by Route 1. The stop has two opposed side platforms, with a level crossing adjacent so passengers can move between platforms at any time when a tram is not passing. Both platforms have approach-display equipment and audio announcements. Wheelchairs are accommodated on both platforms; electric wheelchairs cannot be used because the platform width is below regulation.

Notes

The Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line of JR Kyūshū runs parallel to the tram line right beside the stop. There used to be no level crossing between the tram stop and the local residential road on the JR side, and the JR tracks were officially off-limits; in practice residents took shortcuts across the rails, and pedestrian accidents became frequent in the area. To resolve this, Kagoshima City negotiated with JR Kyūshū to install a new pedestrian-only crossing between the tram stop and the residential road, which entered service on 18 March 2010 (Heisei 22). Today the surroundings include Murasakibaru, Yamada Denki's Kagoshima flagship store and a Uniqlo Shin'ei branch.
