History
Nukumi Station opened on 19 December 1934 when the Japanese Government Railways extended the then Ibusuki Line further south from Kiire. The route was renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line on 31 October 1963, and the station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. Freight handling ended on 20 August 1962 and baggage handling on 8 March 1983, when the station was destaffed with the line's switch to centralised traffic control. The above-ground station has a single island platform reached from the former station-building site by a level crossing, with one remaining siding used to stable maintenance vehicles. It is the southernmost station within the city limits of Kagoshima.
