History

Ibusuki Station opened on 19 December 1934 as the new southern terminus of the Japanese Government Railways Ibusuki Line, when the line was extended south from Kiire. It became a through-station on 25 March 1936 with the further extension to Yamakawa. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1971 and parcel handling on 14 March 1985. The line serving the station was renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line on 31 October 1963, and on 1 April 1987 the stop transferred to JR Kyushu at the privatisation of JNR. On 13 March 2011 the tourist limited express "Ibusuki no Tamatebako" began stopping here, making Ibusuki the southernmost limited-express stop on the JR Group network. The station became contract-operated in 2018 and returned to direct JR operation on 1 October 2023.

Notes

In 1974 the station was twinned with Wakkanai — Japan's northernmost station — and it hosts the country's southernmost staffed JR ticket window (Midori no Madoguchi).
