History

Tayoro Station opened on 3 September 1903 when the Hokkaido Government Railway extended its Teshio Line between Shibetsu and Nayoro. The line was transferred to the Railway Operations Bureau in 1905 and renamed the Sōya Line in 1912, becoming the Sōya Main Line in 1919. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984; the station became unstaffed in November 1984 and fully so after CTC was introduced on 1 November 1986. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The current building dates from 1988, and in 1999 the platform was rebuilt and the station shifted roughly 20 m toward Asahikawa.

Notes

In 1999 the station was bodily relocated about 20 metres toward Asahikawa to make room for the extension of the town's main street across the line.
