History

Wassamu Station opened on 15 November 1899 with the Hokkaido Government Railway Teshio Line extension from Ranru, and on 5 August 1900 the line was pushed on to Shibetsu. It became part of the Soya Line in 1912 and the Soya Main Line in 1919. Operation passed to Japanese National Railways in 1949. Freight ended on 15 November 1982 and the station was unstaffed from 10 November 1984. JR Hokkaido inherited it at the 1987 privatisation, and the current building replaced the JNR-standard wooden depot on 30 November 1988. Simplified consignment continued until 1992, with seconded staff from Shibetsu Station handling sales until April 1995, after which the station has been fully unstaffed.

Notes

Wassamu was once the engine layover for the climb over Shiokari Pass; until the station was unstaffed in 1995, vendors on the platforms sold bento boxes to waiting passengers from a stand that had operated there since 1927.
