History

Furusan began on 1943-09-25 as the Furusan Signal Box on the Japanese Government Railways Muroran Main Line between Mikawa and Yuni, set up to handle wartime traffic. It was promoted to the full general station Furusan on 1946-04-01, with a waiting room added at the same time. Car-load freight handling started on 1947-12-01 but was withdrawn on 1972-03-15; parcel handling and staffing ended on 1980-05-15, and the building was rebuilt in 1982 to a standard plan shared with Abira, Mikawa and Kurioka. JR Hokkaido took over at privatisation on 1987-04-01.

Notes

The station name comes from the Ainu "hur-sam" — "beside the hill" — which was the Ainu name for the Shinkan River, a tributary of the Yuni River that runs nearby.
