History

Mikage opened on 8 September 1907 as Sanenkoro Station (佐念頃駅), a general station on the government railway. The name was changed to Mikage on 15 October 1922, taken from the granite ('mikage-ishi') quarried in the area, after the village of Mikage was separated from Memuro Village the previous year. The station building was rebuilt on 22 November 1967, a footbridge was installed in November 1977, freight handling ended on 2 October 1971, parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984 and the station was made unstaffed on 1 December 1984. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Hokkaido; the passing loop, which had been abolished on 25 October 1986, was reinstalled on 30 August 1990.

Notes

The original name 'Sanenkoro' came from the Ainu 'san-enkor' (a protruding nose), referring to a mountain spur jutting toward the Tokachi River; according to one account, the name was changed because 'San-enkoro' was felt to recall an indelicate anatomical term.
