History

Atsunai Station opened on 1903-12-25 as a general station when the Hokkaido Government Railway completed the Urahoro–Onbetsu section. The line was absorbed into the national railway on 1905-04-01. Freight handling ended on 1971-10-02, when the station's day-to-day duties were contracted out, and parcels followed on 1984-02-01. The last staff withdrew on 1984-12-01 and the station was simply commissioned for a time before being fully unstaffed by 1993. JR Hokkaido inherited it at the 1987 privatisation. The unstaffed station, managed from Urahoro, retains a single side platform and an island platform — three tracks in total — connected by an open footbridge.

Notes

Train crossings use the island platform's tracks 2 and 3 only when necessary; an early morning service originates here at 06:05 for Obihiro.
