History
Higashi-Sanjō Station opened on 1897-11-20 as Ichinokido Station (一ノ木戸駅) on what is now the Shinetsu Main Line. It was renamed Higashi-Sanjō on 1926-08-15. The station forms the eastern terminus of the Yahiko Line, which runs 17.4 kilometres west to Yahiko, and lies 96.2 kilometres east of the Shinetsu Main Line's terminus at Naoetsu. JR East assumed control on 1987-04-01 at JNR privatisation, while JR Freight retains rights over the line. The current layout consists of one side platform with a partial cut-out and one island platform connected by a footbridge, with a staffed Midori no Madoguchi ticket office.
