History
Maekawa Station opened on 29 September 1963 as Maekawa Signal Box (前川信号場) of the Japanese National Railways, and was promoted to a station on 15 August 1964. It passed to JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Platform numbering (1 and 2) was introduced in August 2017, and an upgraded east-side plaza opened on 7 June 2018.

The two platforms have no connecting passage of their own — passengers must use either the underground passage beside the station building or the level crossing on the Niigata side, the latter being a public road.
