History
Echigo-Takiya Station opened on 1 November 1920 as Muikaichi Station (六日市駅) on the Jōetsu North Line at the Miyauchi–Higashi-Ojiya section, then was renamed Echigo-Takiya on 1 October 1925. Located in the Takiyamachi district of Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, the stop sits on what is now the Jōetsu Line. Freight handling ended on 15 December 1970 and parcel service on 1 February 1984; the second through track was removed in November 1984, and the station was destaffed on 14 March 1985. Operations passed to JR East on 1 April 1987 with privatisation. The 2004 Chūetsu earthquake damaged both the station building and platforms; full double-track service resumed on 25 March 2005 after a new building was constructed.

Notes
The current station building dates from the rebuilding after the 23 October 2004 Chūetsu earthquake, which damaged both the old building and the platforms.
