History
Ishiuchi Station opened on 1 November 1925 with the extension of the Jōetsu North Line from Shiozawa to Echigo-Yuzawa, in what is now Minamiuonuma, Niigata. Because the electrified Shimizu Tunnel section terminated here, the Ishiuchi engine depot was sited in the yard to swap locomotives, and helper engines for the long climb were also stationed at the station. The building was rebuilt in 1968 and a separate platform was kept for seasonal ski services. Freight ended in January 1970 and baggage in February 1984. With JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 it joined JR East, and the Midori-no-Madoguchi closed in April 2019 before the station went unstaffed in October 2020.

Notes
Until the Jōetsu Shinkansen opened, Ishiuchi was a regular halt for ski-season "Toki" limited expresses, and the JR fare zone for Kanto B-tier limited-express tickets still extends only as far as this station.
