History

Yubiso Station opened on 1 September 1931 with the inauguration of the single-track Jōetsu Line between Mizukami and Echigo-Yuzawa, its original location lying between the second and third Yubiso tunnels north of the present site. With the 1967 double-tracking of the line and the opening of the long Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, the station was relocated to its current position; the southbound platform was placed on a low embankment beside the new station building, while the northbound platform was set inside the tunnel and is reached by a separate underground passage. The station was destaffed in 1985 and passed to JR East in 1987. The current concrete building dates from January 2010.
