History

Shikishima Station opened on 31 March 1924 on the Jōetsu Line in what is now Akagi-machi Shikishima, Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, 27.5 km from the line's starting point at Takasaki, and takes its name from the former Shikishima Village. Freight handling ended in December 1962 and parcel service in October 1971; the station was unstaffed from 14 March 1985 and passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. It was re-staffed in April 1990 but unstaffed again from May 2004 after a new station building was completed in March 2003. Suica IC service began on 14 March 2009 when the Tokyo near-suburban zone was extended.

Notes

Wooden benches inside the station building bear carvings of Hime-gifu butterflies (Luehdorfia japonica), referencing a nearby habitat — though experts note the carving differs noticeably from the actual species.
