History

Yagihara Station opened on 1 July 1921 with the Joetsu South Line's Shin-Maebashi – Shibukawa extension in what is today Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. Freight handling other than at the dedicated siding ended on 1 October 1971. The station passed to JR East and JR Freight at the 1987 JNR privatisation. Cement traffic for the Denka Shibukawa Service Station — running over a siding northeast of the platforms — ceased in March 2000, ending all regular freight operations. Suica service began on 16 October 2004, the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 30 April 2017, and automated platform announcements were introduced on 21 August 2020. Although JR Freight technically retains the station, no scheduled freight currently calls.

Notes

A vestigial second island-platform face on the Takasaki end has had its pointwork lifted, leaving an unused track stub that still flanks today's working platform.
