History

Shin-Tochigi Station opened on 1 April 1929 on the newly built Tōbu Nikkō Line. On 11 August 1931 the Tōbu Utsunomiya Line began running from Shin-Tochigi, making it a junction. Limited-express stops here began in July 1974 but most expresses were moved to neighbouring Tōbu Tochigi (the JR interchange) from 28 March 2001. Station numbering arrived on 17 March 2012, when Shin-Tochigi was designated TN-12. A small Shin-Tochigi sub-depot of the Minami-Kurihashi rolling-stock area lies on the north side. On 16 March 2024 platform displays were replaced with full-colour LEDs and automated announcements began.
