History
Kuguno Station opened on 25 October 1934 with the JNR Takayama Main Line extension between Hida-Osaka and Sakaue, and passed to JR Central on 1 April 1987 at the JNR breakup. The contracted Tokai Kotsu Jigyo staff position was withdrawn on 1 April 2010, leaving the station unstaffed; short-distance ticket sales were then handled by the adjoining Hida Togenkyo Kuguno Tourism Association until 1 April 2012, after which it was fully unattended. The original building was demolished in November 2010 and replaced in March 2015. At 676 m, Kuguno is the highest station on the Takayama Main Line, sitting near the Miyatōge watershed that divides Japan's Pacific and Sea-of-Japan drainages. Some Limited Express Hida services still call.
