History

Kami-Suwa Station opened on 25 November 1905 in the city of Suwa, Nagano, when the then Railway Bureau extended the Chuo Main Line between Fujimi and Okaya. The present station building was completed in March 1950, and a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket window was added in August 1967. Operation passed from Japanese National Railways to East Japan Railway Company on 1 April 1987 at privatisation. Freight handling ended in January 1984, and Suica became usable in April 2014. From a one-Azusa exception introduced in March 2019, every limited express again stopped here from March 2022.
