History

Tōbu-dōbutsu-kōen Station opened on 1899-08-27 as Sugito Station when the Tōbu Railway's line between Kita-Senju and Kuki was completed, in what is now Miyashiro, Minami-Saitama-gun, Saitama. The Tōbu Nikkō Line started here on 1929-04-01, running through to Shin-Kanuma, making the station the line's origin. On 1981-03-16, to mark the imminent opening of the Tōbu Zoo Park, the station was renamed Tōbu-dōbutsu-kōen and rebuilt as an elevated structure, with through-services from the Eidan Subway Hibiya Line extended from Kita-Kasukabe to Tōbu-dōbutsu-kōen. Through-running with the Hanzōmon and Tōkyū Den-en-toshi lines began on 2003-03-19, and on 2013-03-16 Hibiya Line through-services were extended to Minami-Kurihashi.

Notes

Until Sugito-Takanodai Station opened on the Nikkō Line in 1986, this station — then named Sugito Station — also functioned as the central station for the town of Sugito.
