History

Ina-Matsushima Station opened on 28 December 1909 as Matsushima Station, when the Ina Densha Kidō (later Ina Denki Tetsudō) extended its line from here to Tatsuno, making it the temporary terminus. The station was renamed Ina-Matsushima on 16 March 1923 and incorporated into the Iida Line when the Ina Electric Railway was nationalised on 1 August 1943. Following the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it came under JR Central control, and the current station building was completed in 1992. From 1 April 2013 station duties have been handled by the town of Minowa as a simplified contracted station.

Notes

Although the station is the principal station for the town of Minowa, the town was not formed until 1955 — long after the station opened, which is why the historical place name "Matsushima" survives in the station name.
