History
Tennōdai Station opened on 20 April 1971 as a Japanese National Railways stop between Abiko and Toride, paired with a new electric-car depot built east of Abiko during the quadruple-tracking of the Jōban Line. The working name had been "Shin-Abiko", but a different name was chosen to avoid confusion with Higashi-Abiko on the Narita Line. Initially only the local-line platforms existed; rapid platforms were added in November 1980 and February 1981, and quadruple-tracking through to Toride was completed on 15 November 1982. From 13 March 1988 medium-distance Jōban services also began calling. Operation transferred to JR East at the 1987 privatisation, automatic ticket gates were installed on 23 April 1993, and Suica was introduced on 18 November 2001.

Notes
Rapid trains nearly bypassed Tennōdai in the late 1970s; a sustained municipal and resident campaign persuaded JNR in March 1978 to add rapid-line platforms at locally funded cost, which is why the down rapid platform sits slightly skewed relative to the up.
