History

Minami-Nagareyama Station opened on 1 April 1973 as a Japanese National Railways station on the new Musashino Line. It was one of the line’s twelve original stops to receive trial automatic fare gates. With JNR’s privatisation on 1 April 1987 it became a JR East station, and Suica support followed on 18 November 2001. On 24 August 2005 the Tsukuba Express line opened with its own underground platforms here, creating an interchange. The Tsukuba Express platforms were lengthened by 40 metres on each end on 23 September 2012, offsetting train stopping positions to relieve peak crowding. Through this expansion the station became one of Nagareyama’s busiest interchanges.
