History

Shimo-Itabashi Station opened on 1 May 1914 with the inaugural service of the Tōjō Railway between Ikebukuro and Tanomesawa, taking its name from the Shimo-Itabashi neighbourhood that lay alongside what was then Itabashi Town. It was moved to its present location on 13 March 1935 as part of the Ikebukuro–Kami-Itabashi double-tracking, crossing the boundary into Toshima Ward. The original site is now used as a stabling yard, and the Tōjō Line's 0.0 km post still sits there. The station building was destroyed in the 13 April 1945 Tokyo air raid, and a south-side ticket gate previously open only at peak hours was converted to all-day service on 1 October 2022.

Notes

Despite its name, the station is not actually located in Itabashi Ward — the 1935 relocation moved it across the boundary into Toshima Ward, where it remains today.
